Day 27 of the Great Release Challenge!

Celebrating the Clean Oven!

Day 27 of the Great Release Challenge!
30 Days to an AWESOME New You!

by Silver RavenWolf

Your Mission Today:  Four Days — only four more days!  And here’s a big one — clean your oven.  Oh, I know it is painful, really I do!  You’re probably saying, “I bet Silver has a self-cleaning oven, so it isn’t anything to her!”

The answer to this is Yes and No.

Yes, I do have an oven that is supposed to be self-cleaning; however, two years ago some drunk hit a telephone pole down in Franklintown?  Hit the darned thing… twice.  Which threw the power out twice…bang, bang.  Then the power resumed, and the pole went down, resulting in a third power outage that blew the sensor on my electric oven.  Hence, my oven will no longer clean itself.  It is the old fashioned way, or bust.

As I have preferred the bust-part for quite some time, my oven looks like a dried turd patch.

Yes, I realize I could have called a repair man.  Honestly?  Easy-Off is cheaper.  Um, when I remember to even buy it, that is.

Procrastination.  We all have a few little somethings around the house that we really either hate to do, or have avoided doing because we so dislike either the time consumption or the job itself.  Perhaps you keep a sparkling oven, and I say, “Bully for you!”  Now, go find something that you HAVE been avoiding, and do your best to take care of it.

I do so want to hear!  Hey, If I can break down and tell you the condition of my oven, you can share your hidden clean-up monster!  Today?  Today is meeting procrastination face-to-face — and winning!

My Release Diary — I spent the day tidying up the last of the holiday fare, double checked the refrigerator and did some spot cleaning there.  A few loads of laundry and a pleasant nap!  I pulled out that crochet project (I do love it — the color is Heather, a rich green that’s a bit off kilter) and managed to zap up two more squares.  I now have six.  I only have eighteen to go.  Yeah, I know.  It will take me awhile.  I’ll get there.

I spent the day considering some of the ideas I’ve had over the Mercury Retrograde and jotted a few down.  I also pulled out my calendars for 2011, checked on a few doctor appointment dates for my father, and highlighted all the new and full moons for the coming year.  I also took the time today to go over all that I accomplished in these past twenty-six days from cleaning and decluttering to moments of true enjoyment — parties, family time, building the rat palace (okay, so not pure enjoyment; but, I did feel accomplished after that … ahem… small snafu).  Amid the renovation of the bedroom, cleaning the refrigerator, kitchen cabinets, and hauling out trash from various locations, to giving away the good stuff and relegating the worn and torn to the dumpster of no return — I found several moments of delight, spirituality, joy, and happiness.  What I normally would have found stressful, irritating, or downright annoying I managed to rise above about 98% of the time (hey, nobody’s perfect!).  I can tell you that this holiday season on the whole was just about the best I’ve experienced in the last fifteen years — so…that’s saying something!

How about you?

  1. Oven? clean… it’s new… and I was careful over the holidays… LOL I’ll take a pass for today and find some other grime-encrusted monster to clean, I’m sure…. 🙂

  2. Merry meet again Silver its Paul in az. My wife and i cleaned the stove. Ours is self cleaning too. But dang when we do it that way the smell is yukky. It was atrocious but whew its done. I decided to do some thinking today n how i got here. When i was 18 n wild my sister had me at our house. I saw crystals stones n herbs n i was thinking she was nuts. Then she sat down and had a wand in her hand i was like dam this is weird now years later im on the same path wow just goes to show u to never judge anything. The whole thing has led me to a positive life its way cool. How r u n ur family doing. Is ur son jamie better from that flu. I have been sending energy ur familys way. N how is the room n the rat? Seems he like his palace. By the way just curious what type of dog do u have? Hey did u get the sun from az i sent u? Lol. Many blessings. Ur friend Paul. P.S. I hope u guys can finally relax just a tiny bit. Blessed be.

    1. Hey Paul! Yes, we did get that sun! Everyone else got snow — we got…SUN!!! Hey-yeah! Jamie is recovering (slowly). Things are chugging along here. The rat is happy, lol. Dogs? One mutt — one cattle dog. Many blessings, Paul!!!!!

  3. Hey Silver! First off, lmao @ ‘dried turd patch’; my oven has seen days like that. So, double-duty for me today. First is the oven, of course. It wasn’t half bad a couple weeks ago but now there are all sorts of various holiday concoctions which cake the walls of it, *shudder* I’ll get it done though! As for my area of neglect… I know I should have done it on ‘junk drawer day’, but in addition to said junk drawer (which I did clean and is still clean, thanks to some wonderful woman nudging me to get off of my ass and do it, lol) I have a trunk that has managed to accumulate all sorts of things, I truly am scared of what lurks inside. But, some funeral cards and clipped obits are in there (floating around somewhere) and our ancestors challenge sent me over the edge…the genealogy bug has bitten again and I WILL succeed this time. So, I guess it’s inevitable…time to clean it out. If some of you guys wouldn’t mind, if you could send a little energy (aka ‘luck’) my way in this endeavor I’d be truly greatful. Silver, you’ve told us all we’re awesome, we’ve told you that you’re awesome; we’re all awesome! Look how far we’ve come in just twenty-seven days guys, good job!

  4. Hi Silver
My first reaction was ” Oh No! Not the OVEN!” I have’nt cleaned the oven for I dont know how long. I felt utterly dismayed and just sat there procrastinating. However after about 10 minutes I went to look for the oven cleaner (a smooth creamy pastey stuff) and found it had solidified from lack of use!!
Not to be deterred I scraped a scouring pad over it with hot water andbegan to scrub. It worked. As I scrubbed and scoured two thoughts came to me
    1. If there is something that you dont want to deal with in life, not dealing with it wont make it go away.
    2. The longer you leave it the worse it gets!
I also realised that for some reason apart from putting off things I dont enjoy doing, I also put off doing things I really do enjoy. It must come from having had a strict Irish Catholic upbringing where being happy was almost regarded as a sin!
Its amazing how a simple task like cleaning the oven can lead to enlightenment! I feel so glad I did it now and I have given myself permission to be happy!
Thank you again for this great challenge. YOU are awesome!
    Love and blessings
P.S. I saw the East Coast snowstorm on TV over here. Hope you are all safe and well.

    1. Giving yourself permission is such a super important lesson/reminder/realization — light bulb moment! I’m so proud of you! Here? Hey, Paul sent us sunshine. Everybody else got train wrecked — we’re dry, if not windy — lol. You are AWESOME!

  5. so.. its snowing..quite a bit here not as bad as some places..but snowing just the so really i had no further excuses. My oven is actually alright I bught it to my upmost pride when i moved here.. out of a bad relationship and into applience owning lol. So instead i looked at the project for my nursing classes i’d let go. Its for a gen ed pysch class.. on pyschopaths.. lovely subject eh? Well i olled up my sleeves and researched and now alli have to do is decide power point or speech and finsh up notes. I figured while i was at it id reclean my room set up a new chess set i received and i might even dig into some study cards I have to make for a Anxillary class. whoo? I cant say i’m the most enthused with the writing aspect but I am so blessed to be able to learn! Well you take care all of you i have to be getting back to Hannibal Lector and Kidney Fuction tests

  6. OMG, digging a moat around the apartment building would have been easier.

I have 2 different kinds of oven cleaner. The no fumes, good only for minor crud, and the nuclear waste clean-up type (Easy Off.) I dug out the headlight and got on my knees to inspect the innards of my oven. Don’t bite, I asked politely, as I stuck my head inside the monster’s maw.

As I feared- preheat the oven and reach for the nasty stuff. I sent my husband and his asthma out of the house on a long list of errands, and screwed my courage to the sticking place. Not only did I gag and cough with the hellish fumes, but the darn stuff took paint off the stove! I told you this stuff is reserved for nuclear waste sites!

Ah, but the oven IS ever so sparkling clean now! It always works, always a blessing! Besides, the better to bake apple crumbles in, says my inner child.

I’m just hoping the hearth fairies are busy helping me Easy Off some internal crud because this case begs two very good questions,
1- How did I ever let my oven get this bad?
2- What other monster in my life have I been ignoring?

Silver, it’s time to thank you for getting me to face the one in the kitchen, at long last.
    Hugs and Hearts.

  7. Sigh . . . procrastinating?? All of my computer files on several flash drives that just need to be categorized into appropriate folders and in “One place”.
If I need to do something it takes me an hour to find anything or I up and consider it “lost”.
So . . . there is my big horrible beast that I’m slowly starting to take care of. 😉

  8. Got the oven, toaster oven and microwave done. 🙂 We use the toaster oven and microwave more…and the crockpot – but that had just been washed yesterday.

  9. I took care of my inner oven 🙂 Cleaned old gunk out, put some good fuel in, rested it, sparkling clean today.
